Alliance Police: 2 Arrested In Coupon Scam Involving Ensure Nutritional Drinks - Yahoo

The Alliance Police Department found these bottles of Ensure nutritional supplement when they arrested two people on charges of theft by deception on Wednesday evening. The crimes occurred at the Meijer and Marc's stores in Alliance.

ALLIANCE ‒ Police arrested a man and woman from Sharon, Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening in connection with the theft of nearly $1,600 worth of merchandise, including multiple packs of Ensure, from two stores in the city.

The man, 27, and the woman, 25, who have the same address, were arrested about 7:20 p.M. At the Marc's store at 2444 W. State St.

"During the suspects' arrest, they were found to possess hundreds more packs of Ensure in the back of a Penske truck," the Alliance Police Department wrote on its Facebook page. "The products are believed to have been obtained illegally from the Boardman and Salem Marc's."

A police report says that the male suspect was at Marc's at 6:56 p.M. Wednesday when he took $893 worth of merchandise − 80 packs of Ensure meal supplement drinks, gum and candy − by using 190 fraudulent coupons during the checkout process. He paid $44. He left the store and was stopped by police outside the van.

About 9:03 p.M. June 11, the male suspect allegedly loaded two carts containing 84 packs of Ensure drinks valued at $703 at Meijer at 2500 W. State St. At the self-checkout, he created five different transactions, scanning four packs of the drinks at a time. He then scanned four fraudulent coupons per transaction. The remaining 64 packs of drinks were not scanned. The defendant then left the grocery store and loaded the bottled nutrition supplements into a Penske van.

His female codefendant is alleged to have abandoned a second cart, containing 60 packs of Ensure drinks, in Wednesday's incident at Marc's after seeing police enter the store. She reportedly attempted counter-surveillance in the parking lot before police stopped her and the male suspect outside the van.

The coupons used in both transactions are fraudulent because of how they were obtained. The issuer's policies state they are limited to one per transaction and are void once altered, reproduced, copied, sold or transferred. The total amount of merchandise taken was $1,596.

Police wrote that the investigation into the theft is pending.

An earlier post from the department asked for help from the public to identify the man who stole Ensure from Meijer on June 11. The post included a photo of the male suspect and the rented van in which he left.

Both subjects were charged with engaging in a continuous course of conduct to commit theft by deception, a felony. They were in the Stark County Jail on Thursday. Both defendants are scheduled to make initial appearances Friday in Alliance Municipal Court.

The Alliance Police Facebook post thanked the person who sent them the anonymous tip about the suspects being in Salem at 5:30 p.M. Wednesday.
