Here's How You Can Score A Golden Ticket At Aldi
People who love Aldi really love Aldi, and it's easy to see why. The discount grocery store chain—which has a strong presence in eastern and central states including New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida—keeps its prices super low. How low? According to Aldi's 2025 cost-analysis report, shoppers can save up to 36% on their groceries, which works out to a whopping $4,000 per year. Well, Aldi is about to make shopping at the store even sweeter with the promise of scoring a "golden ticket."
No, this isn't a Willy Wonka–style invite that will give you the literal keys to the kingdom, but it is a pretty darn impressive offer. Even if you've never been an Aldi, this may make you pay your nearest location a visit … and possibly turn you into a lifelong fan.
So what is an Aldi golden ticket, exactly, and how can you snag one? We have all the details below.

What is an Aldi golden ticket?Aldi's golden tickets are gift cards given out by the store as part of a grand-opening promotion. The highest prize is a $100 gift card, redeemable at the store. Just 10 of these $100 gift cards are in the mix at each grand opening, but don't worry—Aldi offers more options to win with $25 gift cards (20 available) and $10 gift cards (70 available). This makes a grand total of 100 gift cards, amounting to $2,200, to be given away during every single Aldi grand opening.

Be one of the first 100 customers to shop during an Aldi grand opening, and you'll receive one golden ticket.
There are a few steps you need to follow, though. As you arrive, join the queue forming outside the store, where you'll eventually receive a laminated entry card, numbered between 1 and 100. The number simply indicates your place in line (and whether you're within the first 100 people) and will later determine the amount of the gift card you win. Then, enter Aldi and shop!
It's only after you've shopped and you're about to check out that you'll hand your entry card to one of Aldi's staff, who will exchange it for a small envelope dedicated to your number. This is your golden ticket. Inside, you'll find one of the three valued gift cards above. The amounts of the gift cards are allocated at random, each assigned to a number before you get there.
Do people actually win these golden tickets?Yes! Aldi has done this special promotion for more than a decade. On average, Aldi opens 80 new stores a year, which means that, to date (and according to our calculations), around 80,000 people have won golden tickets.
Just be aware that if you want to try your luck at an Aldi opening, you may have to swim through a sea of deal lovers—and know that people start lining up early. While the ribbon-cutting at every grand opening is at 9 a.M., don't make the same mistake as Indiana resident Rachael Johnston, who showed up just an hour before that. Too late! For her next try, she got in line at 6:03 a.M. "I wasn't exactly sure how many people were ahead of me, but it was obvious I was among the first 100 people," she writes on the Aldi Reviewer blog. "People in line nearby told me the first people in line said they arrived at 2 a.M."
If 2 a.M. Sounds a bit aggressive, we should mention that timing depends on the location (and your dedication to earning a golden ticket and bragging rights). Larger cities with a greater Aldi prevalence, like Pittsburgh or Birmingham, are likely to attract more people. The following anecdotes also help put this into perspective: One small town of 10,000 had people lining up at 3 a.M., while a vlogger from Michigan arrived at her Aldi opening at 7 a.M., snagging 39th place in the line.
If you don't get a golden ticket, are there any second-place prizes? No matter what time you show up, Aldi has something to offer everyone. Customers often walk away with Aldi coupons and a quarter-keeper keychain (for renting Aldi carts!). We know, it's not $100, but shoppers can also enter a bonus raffle to win a $500 Aldi gift card. This bonus sweepstakes is free to enter and available at every grand opening. To enter, simply scan the QR code given out as fliers to those in line, on posters throughout the store or on a board at the front of the store.
According to the Michigan vlogger I mentioned above, Jackie from Grocery Addict, shoppers were given a flier with a QR code while waiting in line. She ended up getting a $10 gift card, plus at least six Aldi coupons, two quarter-keeper keychains, an Aldi tote filled with random goodies and an assortment of snacks, such as white cheddar puffs, freeze-dried strawberries and low-cal chocolate wafers.
Where is Aldi opening in 2025?Aldi is opening 225 stores this year, so we can't list them all here. In fact, it would be impossible to list them all because not all of the locations have been revealed yet. But here are a few we do know about:
Nothing near you? Don't despair! Last year, Aldi announced plans to open 800 new stores nationwide by 2028. So keep your eyes peeled for store announcements on the Aldi website, and good luck scoring your very own golden ticket!
